Kam's

Type of establishment:  Chinese Restaurant
Located:  Montrose Avenue on the edge of the Museum District

Summary:
I have been to Kam's a handful of times.  With how many superb reviews that I have received from friends, I have to say that I continually been disappointed.  It is not the best Chinese food that I have found in Houston and it is not the cheapest either.

Their dumplings are pretty good (Auntie Chang's is better).

Final thoughts:  More than three strikes.. You are out.

Junction

Type of establishment:  Bar that serves food.
Located:  West Gray in Midtown

Summary:
The Junction used to be the Wet Spot years ago.  They have good drinks.  Their shrimp jammer, ribs, chicken wings, bacon wrapped quail, and sampler platters are some of the best basic bar grub you will get in the area.  They have by far the best seasoned crawfish consistently this year in town.  They make it how I like it -- spicy. If you like watching sports, they have televisions everywhere in addition to nice restrooms which isn't always a given at a bar.

Final thoughts:  Try the shrimp jammers, crawfish, ribs, and quail.

El Rey Taqueria

Type of food:  Mexican and Cuban
Location: on Washington at Shepherd (there are other locations throughout Houston)
website:  http://www.elreytaqueria.com/

Summary:  First off, I went her with a dear friend to get a quick bite to eat around midday last Sunday.  Ordered a Lemonade, #10 (Ropa Viejo on corn) and #18 (Cuban taco with Chicken on Flour).  It was so good.  I loved the carmelization of the plantains that were in the Cuban taco in addition to the perfectly (unbland) black beans, rice, and chicken.  Then you add onto that the juiciness of the roja viejo and perfection of the lemonade----I pretty much wanted to camp out at El Rey for the remainder of the day and  to eat my way through the menu.  I didn't stay because I had to do errands, but in less than a few hours later, I was at El Rey again ordering an iced tea and a large tortilla soup with another friend.   The tortilla soup had awesome flavor and was good even without lime or cilantro (which says something); on top of it, the large was huge.  I ended up having to take it home and have it for another meal.  I am not complaining at all.

Final thoughts:  This place is now a favorite.  It has good prices and my mission is to try everything on the menu...

Chicago Italian Beef

Location:  Airline at 20th Street/Cavalcade.  Northeast Houston/Heights.

Type of Food:  Chicago classics.  Deepdish pizza, hotdogs, burgers, and Italian beef sandwiches.

Summary:  Today, I decided to try out Chicago Italian Beef on Airline.  I have been wanting to visit this restaurant for years.  I am an Italian Beef snob.  I know how to make it in addition to know I understand what it is supposed to taste like.  The Italian Beef at this location tastes like a glorified French dip sandwich without flavor.  It didn't have the right seasonings or correct type of peppers.  Additionally there was not enough juice.

Final Thoughts:  I think that I will try to wait for the real food in Chicago or try making it myself. My version may not taste exactly like the real thing, but it tastes a heck of a lot more like the real thing than Chicago Italian Beef's version.  Maybe I will go back and try their deep dish. Maybe, but I fear it may be like Star Pizza's version which is NOT CHICAGO DEEP DISH!!!

Kublai Khan

Location:  Milam in Midtown

Types of Food:  Mongolian Stirfry and Traveling Sushi

Summary:  On Friday, I decided to go to Kublai Khan for lunch.  I ordered the stir-fry where I given a bowl and traveled through the food line to handpick protein, vegetables, spices, and sauces.  The cooks fried it up and delivered it to my table along with a starch of my choosing (white rice, brown rice, fried rice, noodles).  I decided to go with all fish since it was a Friday during Lent.  While waiting for my food, I chose a few sushi dishes traveling on the conveyor belt.  All the food was complemented by the great hot tea.  My server was very nice.  You could tell that the restaurant was new and they were working some of the kinks out of the business.

Final Thoughts:  I will be back.  I love stir-fry and athough, it wasn't perfect, I really, really like stirfry.

Van Loc

Location:  Milam in Midtown section of Houston

Type of Food:  Vietnamese

Summary:  On the last Sunday of Chinese New Year's, I went with my friend, Isabel, to Van Loc.  Isabel had been to Van Loc many times over the year  I hadn't been there at all.We ordered small order of Gỏi Cuốn (Spring Rolls - Shrimp and pork rolled with fresh lettuce, vermicelli in rice paper), Com Tôm Xào  (Steamed rice with shrimp and vegetables), and Bún Chả Gìo (Imperial egg rolls with vermicelli).
The food was really good.  The service was a bit off.  Also, we didn't like the atmosphere as much (it was a lot plainer than it was previously).

Final Thoughts:  It is good food overall.

The places that we were sad to see go...

Feast (located on Elgin on edge of Midtown/Montrose area):  This was an awesome restaurant with a great Chef's Table.   Kris and I ate the Chef's Table which included 3 appetizers, 5 entrees (it was supposed to be 4, but there was a mistake), and 3 desserts for her birthday back in July 2012.  One of the best meals we had ever tasted in Houston area.

Big Mamou (located on Studewood between White Oak and 11th):  It was a cajun style restaurant/bar.  They closed within the last week.  They supposedly had great beignets.

Stella Sola (Located on Studewood near 9th in the Heights):  When they closed over a year ago, I was in tears.  I had one of my best all-time meals there less than a year before they closed. They had great food and service in addition to a drink menu that I would have drank anything off of.

Raku

Location:  Midtown section of Houston; Corner of Corner of Smith and Elgin
Type of Food:  Sushi

Summary:  I have driven by Raku countless times and have never tried it out.  I figured that today I would treat myself to a sushi at lunch in celebration that it is pay day.  When I arrived, I was quickly greeted and seated at the bar per my request.  I order an iced tea, 3 different types of nigiri (peppered tuna, yellowtail, and cured mackerel) in addition to a spicy tuna roll and a spicy yellowtail roll.  The server was extremely nice.  The iced tea wasn't exactly the best choice for a drink on a colder day in Houston; plus, you can tell that not a lot of people buy iced tea from the restaurant.  It tasted like tea bags were overly brewed and the tea was at least a few days old.  I first received my two sushi rolls; they were pretty good, but they were not the best that I have had in the Houston area.  When I was given the nigiri, the peppered tuna and cured mackerel were my favorite.

Final Thoughts:  After all was said and done, the nigiri was the best part of the meal. The meal was $34 total, which is a bit on the pricey side for what I ordered; plus, I have found places in Houston and other areas in United States that gives far fresher tasting sushi at more affordable prices.  I have no problem spending the money on good sushi, but so-so sushi--- not so much.

Kahn's deli

Location:  Rice Blvd. in Rice Village in Houston

Type of Food: Sandwiches, sliders, boutique beer.

Summary:  Kahn's is my standby for great sandwiches that I miss from Up North.  They are the only ones other than Kenny and Ziggy's in the Galleria that know how to do a corned beef sandwich or pastrami sandwich.  They have a vast selection sandwiches.  A recent add-on to their menu is sliders.  They have a kitschy collections of beer-- some in bottles, some in cans, and some on tap.

Final Thoughts:  The first time that I was there I tried their half pastrami half corned beef sandwich. It was amazing.  The second time I went there I had a pastrami sandwich, matzo ball soup, and one of their great beers.  The matzo had great flavor; it was unlike any matzo ball soup that I had tried before.  They make theirs with parsnip.  GREAT FLAVORS.

Next time you are near Rice Village make sure to try Kahn's.

Mai's

Location:  Midtown off of Milam between Elgin and Alabama

Type of Food:  Vietnamese

Summary:  I love Mai's.  It is one of those restaurants that I go to when I have time to go to lunch and sometimes dinner after a hard day.  I always have an awesome time eating at Mai's at lunch.  I sit at the bar usually.  Dinnertime is not as much fun even when I sit at the bar because the bartender that I have dealt with usually isn't extremely nice.

Normally I get Beef Pho with a iced tea.  As of lately, I have branched out into trying the Noodle soups on the menu.  I am not really a huge fan of their Pho ga (chicken pho); it is good, but not the best that I have had before.

Final Thoughts:  It is a great restaurant to go to if you want food fast.  Sometimes it seems like they cook faster than fast food restaurants and it is a heck of a lot healthier.

Lola's

Location:  Heights Blvd at White Oak in Heights section of Houston.

Type of Food:  American

Summary: Today I went to Lola's for the second time in the last month.  It is located at the corner of 11th Street and Yale in the Heights.  I like the wide selection of food that you can order.

The first time I went to Lola's I tried the Waffles and Chicken which were totally mouthwatering and tasty.  I am typically not a big fan of fried chicken and have to be in the mood, but you know what?  I would eat Lola's fried chicken any day of the week.  The waffles are topped with berries and whipped cream with a side of syrup and butter.

Today I tried the Day After Thanksgiving sandwich with a side salad with pecan vinaigrette.   Sandwich was a bit of a disappointment.  The cranberry sauce was more like the congealed sauce out of a can. The salad was more so a mix of different lettuces and no other vegetables.  (I am a salad snob; I like salads that have a little of glitz and this salad had no glitz).

Final Thoughts:  Although this experience was not great, there looks to be a bunch more items I need to try and I will be back.

"Fine Art + Food Trucks": Museum of Fine Arts Houston Food Trucks

I was one of those people introduced to food trucks in Houston close to 10 years ago.  I used to buy tamales from a Tamale Truck in Clear Lake back when I lived in the area.  I have always liked food trucks and I am so very excited that within walking distance from where I live I can go any day of the week and get food from one.

The trucks are parked in the parking lot next to the main entrance of Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden every day 11am to 3pm.   To see the schedule of food trucks, visit the MFAH website at http://www.mfah.org/visit/fine-art-food-trucks/ .

Maria Selma

Location:  Richmond Blvd. near Mandell intersection in Houston

Type of Food:  Mexican

Summary:  Yesterday, I went for the second time to Maria Selma for dinner.  The first time that I went to Maria Selma and I tried Fajitas for two and a few margarita. The fajitas were okay, but not nearly as good as some of the fajitas that I have eaten at other places.  Yesterday I had the enchilada verdes with chicken and they were amazing.  They were made in a way that I could taste the corn tortillas along with have an amazing cheese on top that would be more like what I would find in Mexico.  From now on, I will be trying the enchiladas which are a big enough portion to share between two people.

Final Thoughts:  I will come back to this place.  I like that I can get food here that would be more like what I would have in Mexico.

If you want to try out Maria Selma, stop by its location on Richmond near Mandel (1617 Richmond, Houston, TX 77006).  The restaurant website is http://www.mariaselma.com/ .

Lucky Burger

Location:  Richmond at the corner of Mandell in Houston

Type of Food:  Burgers and junk Chinese.

Summary:  Lucky Burger has been around for over 30 years.  I tried Lucky Burger two weekends ago and I have to say that I will be back. It is nothing fancy, but you know what?  Burgers don't need to be fancy.  I like the fact that you can go there and get fried fish, chicken, burgers, fries, shakes, and fried rice.  They also deliver.

On my first visit, I tried the Jalapeno burger which was yum.. I am not a fan of the fries, but there are so many other things to try on the menu.

Website:  http://www.luckyburger.com/

Final Thoughts:  Relatively good burgers and good prices.

BRC

We had high expectations for BRC.  Hmmm..  How do I say this?  We were both disappointed.  We started off going to BRC with a 30 plus minute wait when over half the restaurant was empty because the hostess didn't want to seat our party of 3 at a booth.  The waitress was great when finally were seating.  The food was sub-par.  The mussels that we ordered for an appetizer were probably the best thing we ate.  The lemonade was even tarter than expected.  The Southern Chicken Fried Steak was nothing spectacular and had no real "uniqueness" to its flavor.  The Steak on the menu with tomatoes and bleu cheese was the best entree of the three we ordered.  It is one of those experiences which makes both Kris and I wonder if we want to give it another try.

Sammy's Wild Game Grill

Location:  Washington Blvd near Heights Boulevard in Houston

Type of Food:  Wild Game

Summary: Well Kris and I have been to Sammy's Wild Game Grill more than a few times.  Sammy's is located at Washington near Heights Boulevard.   Writing about the food we have tried there makes me want to go there again like ---- NOW!  They have a great selection of wild game brats, hot dogs, and burgers.  Each has a selection of three toppings.  The pheasant brats is awesome.  The pretzel bun it comes out on is great (one of the best we have both had).  The sides are quite good.  We both love sweet potato fries.  The sauces that they have are very flavorful.

Final Thoughts:  Pretty much we both agree that we haven't been disappointed any of the times we have been there.  They have a good selection of drinks (alcohol and not) with multiple televisions to watch sporting events.  It is quite charming that you can actually order your meal in the drive-thru if you don't want to get out of the car.

Phoenicia (Yes the market with new location downtown):

Location: one at McKinney and Austin in downtown Houston; another location:  Westheimer at Kirkwood in the west side of Houston.

Type of Food:  Market.  Middle Eastern and International Market.

Summary:  Over recent weeks since the downtown Phoenicia location has opened, Kris and I have went to Phoenicia more than a few times.  If you have been to the Kirkwood and Westheimer area location, you know generally what Phoenicia is ---  think gourmet market meets Costco.  The downtown location is situated at McKinney and Austin in the first two floors across the street from the Four Season.  They have free parking and overall it is  smaller than its sister location.  You can still find great meat, spices, teas, olive oil, alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages, cheeses, olives, and much, much more.

Final Thoughts:  If you have not checked it out, seriously recommend you do soon.

Little Boxwood's

Location:  Alabama near Westlayan area.

Type of Food:  American.

Summary:  Kris and I were on an adventure to find a great place for brunch this past Saturday and I have to say we hit the jackpot!!  Little Boxwood's is the cafe at the Thompson + Hanson; they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.  On Saturday and Sunday, they have brunch too.

When Ms. Kristina and I went, we were lucky enough to beat the total rush when we found this gem.  We ordered a scone of the day (chocolate hazelnut and banana) and a cheese & meat platter to share. The scone had a very good flavor; it was not your typical scone that you would find in the UK or Ireland, but more so a cross between a muffin and a biscuit with great flavoring.  The meat  and cheese tray had toasted hazelnuts, various cheeses (Gruyere and a few others), various smoked meats (smoked prosciutto among them), dried cranberries, honey in a honeycomb, jalapeno honey, and the lightest, fluffiest flatbread with sea salt and parmesan on it.  If we could have licked the jalapeno honey off the board without everyone else staring  at us in horror, I think we would have.

For the main dish, Kris ordered the Salmon which came on a bed of spinach with large crudite with goat cheese on it.  The salad was spot on.  The salmon was cooked perfectly.  I ordered the Summer Salad which was a spinach salad with julienne Granny Smith Apples, blue cheese crumbles, candied walnuts, grilled chicken, and apple cider vinegar dressing.  This salad was so amazing that I pretty much ate the whole dish in one sitting.  We both agree that in our quest for a great brunch place, we found that along with a great salad place!!  Another item of note, which was down right amazing, was their lemonade infused with mint.

Final Thoughts:  Next time you are in the area, make sure to try out Little Boxwood's; yes it is a bit on the pricey side, but it is one of those decadent places everyone needs to treat themselves every once in a while.  I am sure it will not disappoint.

--Megan

Note:  If you do go, it is located on Alabama at Saint (near where Alabama and Westlayan intersect and Alabama turns into nothing).  There is parking on the next street over from Saint by a Foreign Car Garage.  The particular parking lot has a lot more space than the parking area right next to the Thompson + Hanson.

Petite Sweets

Location:  Alabama near Kirby Drive in Houston

Type of Food:  Sweets

Summary:  We did a progressive meal and went somewhere different for dessert after we left Mockingbird Bistro. We ended up at Petite Sweets, which was a great idea. They have cake balls, whoopie pies, and my favorite cupcakes... and they are all in a miniature size, which was great and so cute. We had the whoopie pies in pumpkin, pistachio, mocha, and red velvet. They were all very unique in flavors. Our favorites were the mocha, pistachio, and red velvet. Pumpkin not so much to much allspice for us. Now for the cake balls, we sampled  Italian Cream Cake and a Salty Caramel. Salty Caramel was our pick for the cake balls!! Now on to cupcakes -- we had a Bacon Pancake, Ice Cream Sundae and a  Black and White. Bacon Pancake was hands down THE BEST CUP CAKE I HAVE EVER HAD!!!!

Final Thoughts:  The little sweets treats were about $2 a piece and worth it.... Great for when you are having a sweet tooth craving. Try em out!

Mockingbird Bistro

Location:  Fairview area of Houston.

Type of Food:  Steakhouse type place.  American.

Summary:  We visited Mockingbird Bistro this week and all I can say is GREAT!! We decided to just do the appetizers on this one because the menu was just so amazing and I can say we picked a winner, on appetizers and the place. We started off with the Washington State Black Mussels.... and I am getting the cravings right now just writing about them... they were steamed to absolute perfection. We also had the Beef Carpaccio I have never had a beef carpaccio as delish as this and it had a horseradish cream sauce as well.. the only problem with this was there was not enough sauce for the meat....Last but not least was the Charcuteris.... the crustiness were absolutely awesome and the pesto that was on then was so creamy I swore I had heaven in my mouth. The service was outstanding. The atmosphere was elegant and romantic great for date night.

Final Thoughts:   I definitely recommend Mocking bird Bistro for your next romantic dinner! Prices were well worth the quality. It will set you back about $30 a person, but a must try!
